(Chambersburg, PA) -- Dedicated to supporting the local community, members of the Shippensburg Area High School National Honor Society (NHS) recently raised funds for Keystone Health Center's Bryce Cochran Endowment Fund. Through the coordination and organization of two spring fundraisers, the nearly 30 NHS juniors and seniors rallied their classmates to raise more than $1,000 for a good cause.

"Our organization's motto is to demonstrate excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character," Elizabeth Pfister, the Shippensburg Chapter National Honor Society President, explained. "To serve the community in which we live, we made a decision to donate the proceeds from our spring fundraisers to the Bryce Cochran Endowment Fund to help provide quality, accessible health care to the less fortunate."

Pfister, who received her diploma last week during Shippensburg High School's commencement service, was very pleased to recently present a check to Keystone Health Center. "We identified the Bryce Cochran Endowment Fund as an ideal candidate to receive the proceeds because the Fund directly benefits the people of Shippensburg. It was a learning experience, we had no idea there were so many people within our community who are struggling financially and just need a little support."

Members of the society, who are required to retain a 3.8 GPA each marking period, orchestrated "Slipper Day," an event that encouraged students to wear their slippers to school for a small donation, and a "Miniature Golf Tournament and Driving Range Charity Event," where students and their families purchased tickets to take part in the all-day golf outing at Links of Olde Scotland.

According to Barbara Rank, Shippensburg High School teacher and National Honor Society advisor, the students did a tremendous job organizing the events and were extremely enthusiastic about helping the local community. "We can be very proud of these young people for their dedication and motivation to helping others," Rank said. "They were inspired to work very hard on these events because they knew they could have a positive impact on a neighbor, a friend or even a fellow classmate."

"It's so wonderful that our students recognize our community's needs and put forth great effort to make a difference in the lives of others," Cochran said.

Named after the late husband of Joanne Cochran, CEO and president of Keystone Health Center, the Bryce Cochran Endowment Fund was established in 1998 by the Board of Directors. According to Cochran, the generous gift will be added to the endowment, which over time will provide Keystone funding to further enable the health center to continue to serve the underinsured and working poor.

"We graciously accept the donation from the Shippensburg High School National Honor Society members," Cochran said. "The truth is that an overwhelming number of uninsured and medically underserved live right here in our backyard. It's so wonderful that our students recognize our community's needs and put forth great effort to make a difference in the lives of others. Our organization is grateful to Elizabeth and the Honor Society for their donation."

A member of the Shippensburg Chapter NHS for two years, Pfister plans to attend DeSales University near Allentown in the fall where she will major in Pharmaceutical Marketing.
