(Chambersburg, PA) - An estimated 200 residents of Chambersburg participated in the second annual Community Outreach Day in Chambersburg's Southgate Shopping Center parking lot on Friday, August 22, 2003.

"We had a wonderful turnout," Jenny Englerth, Keystone's Director of Operations and Community Outreach Day coordinator, said. "We hoped to have made the residents aware of healthy lifestyle practices as well as the professional services in the area. From the turnout and the reactions we have received, I believe we succeeded."

Hosted by Keystone Health Center, the fair provided valuable free testing and screening such as blood pressure and glucose, body fat measurements and confidential HIV testing. Many representatives from local organizations, such as Curves for Women, Safe Kids Coalition, Boys and Girls Club of Franklin County, Baltimore Life, Franklin County Literacy Council and Franklin County Drug & Alcohol, also set up exhibits and provided handouts and goodies throughout the afternoon.

Dianne Elsom, Case Manager with Keystone's HIV/AIDS Department, was present to help promote HIV/AIDS awareness.

"At our center we provide case management, health education and community outreach," Ms. Elsom said. "We get everyone involved by letting them know the seriousness of HIV, helping those who are affected and promoting better health for a longer period of time."

Donna Meyers, Owner of Chambersburg's Curves for Women, conducted body fat measurements and said she was more than pleased to participate in the event to offer advice to those hoping to lose or manage their weight.

"A lot of people don't realize that you do not have to be terribly overweight to have a large amount of body fat. Quite a few people have been shocked to learn the amount of fat in their bodies," Meyers said.

Local residents said the fair was very beneficial. "I attended the fair last year and thought it was very informative, but it seems the fair has gotten even better," said one attendee. Others agreed, calling the event a "great service" to the community.

Attendees who visited the fair also had the opportunity to take part in a raffle, with the grand prize being a new child's bicycle. Restaurants provided gift certificates to other winners. Several organizations also gave away free gifts such as toothbrushes and lunch boxes. The Safe Kids Coalition gave away nearly 70 bicycle helmets.

Three-year-old Jaylin Jones and two-year-old Octivia Walker enjoyed receiving their free bicycle helmets, but for their grandmother, Cathy Jones, the event was a chance to learn more about how to keep Jaylin and Octivia safe.

"I'm adamant about making sure they are both safe when they ride their bicycles," Ms. Jones said, as she watched Lisa McMichael, a representative with the Safe Kids Program, properly adjust the helmet on Octivia's head. "It's very important to me that their helmets fit properly. I've heard some horrible stories about children being hurt while riding their bikes. I want to make sure my granddaughters don't become the subject of one of those stories."

Community Outreach Day was sponsored by the Chambersburg Wal-Mart, Representative Jeff Coy, Congressman Shuster, Delamor Enterprises (McDonald's), Burger King, Applebees, Pibby's, Main Street Deli, Montezuma's, Johnnie's Restaurant Supplies, Proctor & Gamble and Cracker Barrel.

"I appreciate the support of the community," Englerth said. "We are already making plans to make next year's Outreach Day even more successful.
