U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster was scheduled to visit Keystone Rural Health Center in Chambersburg today to see how the center operates.

Shuster's intention is to see what is working at Keystone and take it to other parts of the 9th Congressional District he represents, said Angelo Terrana, spokesperson for Shuster.

"The 9th district is overwhelmingly rural," Terrana said.

Keystone began in 1986 as a health care site for migrant workers. It has grown into an organization with four different sites: a family practice, an obstetrics-gynecology practice and dental practice -- all in Chambersburg -- and a satellite practice in Path Valley.

As a federal community health center, Keystone provides care to all patients, whether that person has private insurance, Medicare or no insurance at all.

After some remarks, the schedule called for a tour of Keystone's family practice, 820 Fifth Ave.

Keystone is one of a few places in Franklin County Shuster was scheduled to visit today. At the moment, Congress is in recess and will not meet again until Sept. 4.

Before the visit, Joanne Cochran, president and chief executive officer of Keystone, said she wanted to show Shuster the universal access Keystone provides.

Bank presidents and migrant workers sit in the same waiting room to receive the same quality of care at Keystone, Cochran said.

"I'm hoping we can encourage him to stand up for all the things we're about," Cochran said.

This is the first time a federal representative has visited Keystone, though members of the state House and Senate have, Cochran said.
