CHAMBERSBURG, PA -- Last year, many children with serious dental diseases received free dental care through Keystone Rural Health Center's school-based Dental Sealant Project and the Children's Dental Clinic Project, both collaborative efforts based in Berks County. Recognizing the program's tremendous contribution to the oral health of children of migrant farmworkers and other children in need, members of the Berks-Schuylkill Dental Hygienist Association recently donated a 3M Epilar Freelight Curing Light to Selina Zygmunt, regional manager of Keystone Rural Health Center's Farmworker Programs for Berks, Lancaster and Lehigh Counties.

The state-of-the-art equipment was presented to Zygmunt, an honorary member of the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienist's Association (PDHA), at the recent Dental Association annual dinner. The curing light, used to harden sealant material after it has been applied to teeth, will be used in the School-based Dental Sealant Project serving farmworker and other low income, minority children in the Reading School District.

"We are very honored and grateful to receive this equipment," Zygmunt said. "The cordless, narrow wand is extremely portable allowing us to provide efficient dental care to children within the community."

Last year, the sealant project, a collaboration among Keystone, the hygienist component and the St. Joseph Medical Center Dental Residency Program, provided services for approximately 250 children. Many of the children with serious dental disease have also received free dental care at the Children's Dental Clinic Project, an outgrowth of the sealant project.

The light also represents an in-kind contribution from A. Leventhal & Sons, Inc., a distributor of the Epilar Freelight, as well as a personal financial contribution from Mark Horean, a Leventhal sales representative. The 3M Company and Leventhal are also contributing sealant material to what both feel is an exceptionally valuable program.
