SHIPPENSBURG AREA HIGH SCHOOL'S HONOR SOCIETY PRESENTS DONATION TO KEYSTONE HEALTH CENTER
John Kerr, Joanne Cochran, According to Kerr, “One of the purposes of the Honor Society is to be of service to the community, so each year we raise funds to give to a local organization that will use the money to help people within our community.” This spring, in addition to a bake sale, the group raised funds by selling prom carnations and tickets to a chicken barbeque. The carnations and portions of the chicken barbeque were donated by local businesses. In receiving the $1,500 contribution, Joanne Cochran, president and chief executive officer of Keystone Health Center said, “We are very grateful that the honor society members selected Keystone as the recipient of their fund raising efforts. This donation will help Keystone provide dental care to children from needy families. Many of our dental patients are from the Shippensburg Area because Keystone’s dental practice is the only one in our area that routinely provides care to those with no insurance.” Because Keystone Health Center is a federally-funded Community Health Center, no one is turned away even if they are unable to pay. There are four themes that guide Honor Society chapters – scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Barbara Rank, a mathematics teacher at the high school and the advisor to the Honor Society, said, “In the area of service, the students become aware of needs in the local community as they go through the process of selecting a charity. As the students conduct their fund raisers, they make their fellow students aware of how the money will be used.” The National Honor Society program recognizes outstanding high school students. This school year, the Shippensburg Area High School chapter has 40 members. Following graduation, Kerr, who comes from a military family, will go to Colorado Springs, CO, for a 6-week summer training session before starting classes at the U.S. Air Force Academy in August. John’s brother Rick, a 2001 graduate of Shippensburg High School, a graduate of the Air Force Academy, and a pilot in the Air Force, will present John’s appointment to the academy to him. In addition to being an honor student, John is active in sports and takes flying lessons in Hagerstown, MD. Keystone Health Center provides high-quality family medicine, internal medicine, pediatric, obstetric, gynecological, cardiac, behavioral, and dental health care and, when needed, social services to anyone in the community including the underserved and vulnerable populations. No one is turned away due to inability to pay. Keystone now operates six full-time primary care practices—Keystone Family Medicine, Keystone Internal Medicine, Keystone Behavioral Health, Keystone Dental Care, Keystone Women's Care, and Franklin County Pediatrics—and one full-time specialty practice, the Franklin County Heart Center. Keystone also operates one year-round migrant and seasonal farmworker site in Berks County and one seasonal farmworker site in Adams County. Services to migrant farmworkers are also provided through outreach workers and contracted providers across the Commonwealth.
