What is a Cardiologist?

A cardiologist is a physician who is certified to treat problems of the cardiovascular system—the heart, arteries, and veins. Cardiology is classified as an internal medicine subspecialty. Knowledge of internal medicine and other specialties is required to obtain certification.

Interventional Cardiologist

Dr. Tang, who specializes in interventional cardiology, earned his Bachelor of Science in Basic Medical Services and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of the Philippines—College of Medicine. He received extensive education and training at the State University of New York where he completed an internship and residency training in Internal Medicine as well as fellowship training in Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology.

Dr. Tang is currently serving a 10-year term as a Diplomat of the American Board of both Internal and Cardiovascular Disease. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Cardiology, and the American Board of Interventional Cardiology.

Arshad M. Safi, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.C.P., F.S.C.A.I.
Interventional Cardiologist

Dr. Safi earned his medical degree from King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan in 1988, and completed a residency in internal medicine, fellowships in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease, and a research fellowship in cardiology at the State University of New York Health Center at Brooklyn, NY. Before joining Franklin County Heart Center, he served on the medical staff of The Brooklyn Hospital Center, the University Hospital of Brooklyn, and Saint Vincent’s Hospital Medical Center in New York City and served as Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Interventional Cardiology at The Brooklyn Hospital Center.

Dr. Safi is Board certified in Nuclear Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease, and Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Angiology, and the American College of Physicians.

Betsie Figueroa, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.C.C.P.
Cardiologist

Dr. Figueroa earned her M.D. in 1987 at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan. Her experience includes an internship and residency at Veterans Administration Medical Center, University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and a fellowship in cardiology disease at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to joining the Franklin County Heart Center, she was a cardiologist in private practices in New Jersey and the Philadelphia area and was on the staff of several hospitals, including Hanneman University Hospital and Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Dr. Figueroa is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases, the Certification Council of Nuclear Cardiology, and the American Society of Echocardiography.

Padma B. Hari, M.D.
Cardiologist

Dr. Hari, who is a non-invasive cardiologist, earned her medical degree from Bharathidasan University, Thanjavur Medical College, India, in 1993. After practicing medicine for several years in India, she completed a residency in internal medicine at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Shadyside in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Hari also completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Hari is Board certified in Cardiology and Nuclear Cardiology and is a Diplomat in cardiovascular disease.

Shaiful Islam, M.D.
Cardiologist

Dr. Islam earned his medical degree from Dhaka Medical College in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed an internship at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, a fellowship at Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons, and a residency and fellowship at the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine & Research, all in Dhaka. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Coney Island Hospital and The New York-Presbyterian (Cornell) Hospital.

Dr. Islam is certified by in the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases, the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Hari Gnana, M.D.
Cardiologist

Dr. Gnana earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, New York/Dominica. He completed an Internship and Residency, and was Chief Resident, in Internal Medicine at Cooper University Hospital, University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden, NJ. He completed a Cardiology Fellowship at Cooper Heart Institute at University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He also completed a Clinical Cardiology Research Fellowship at the Center for Heart Failure/Transplant, Division of Cardiology, MCP-Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Luc M. Oke, M.D., PH.D., F.A.C.C.
Cardiologist

Dr. Oke earned his medical degree from the National University of Benin Faculty of Health Sciences in Cotonou, Benin. He completed an Inter-University Diploma of Specialty/Cardiovascular Diseases at Academie d’Orleans and the University of Tours in Tours, France. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Cardiovascular Physiology at Howard University
in Washington, DC. Dr. Oke completed a residency in the Department of Cardiology at Hôpital Trousseau and Affiliated University of Tours in France. He also completed a residency at Howard University Hospital Department of Medicine. He completed a fellowship at Howard University Department of Medicine Division of Cardiology. He completed Post-Doctoral training in Cardiovascular Research in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Howard University College of Medicine.

Dr. Oke is Board certified in internal medicine and internal/cardiovascular diseases.

Gary W. Lewis, M.D.
Cardiologist

Dr. Lewis, who has been practicing medicine for 19 years, completed his Internal Medicine Internship, his Internal Medicine Residency, and his Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.  He began his medical education at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1985 from the Ross University School of Medicine, completing clinical rotations in New Jersey, New York, and Ohio. Prior to joining the Franklin County Heart Center, Dr. Lewis was in private practice in Hagerstown, MD, and Greensburg, PA.

 Dr. Lewis is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Diseases. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner may practice medicine under physician supervision.  She assesses a patient’s health status by getting health histories, performing exams, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests.  In a cardiology practice, a nurse practitioner has special training to treat problems of the cardiovascular system.  She consults with a cardiologist and establishes a treatment plan.

Ms. Hoffeditz earned a Master of Science in Nursing degree and completed the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program in 2000 from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville, TN.  She received a Bachelor of Science from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

Shani Gadwaw, C.R.N.P., R.N., B.S.N., M.S.N.

Nurse Practitioner

 

Ms. Gadwaw earned Bachelors and Masters in Nursing degrees and completed a Nurse Practitioner Program in 2000 from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. She completed an Associates of Science in Nursing degree at Valencia Community College in Orlando. Prior to coming to Chambersburg, Ms. Gadwaw’s work experience has focused on cardiology services for over nine years.

What is a Physician Assistant?

A physician assistant (PA) is a health care professional licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision and is trained to do many tasks that physicians usually do. PAs must complete an accredited, formal education program and pass a certifying exam. Those PAs who pass the exam may use the credential “PA-C.”
 


Katherine E. Cornwell, M.P.A.S., P.A.-C.
Physician Assistant

Ms. Cornwell completed her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA, in 2005. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology-Exercise Science at Penn State University.

Office Hours

Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Emergencies When the Office Is Closed - If you have an emergency, immediately call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. When the office is closed, if you have a medical problem that you do not feel is an emergency but can't wait until our office reopens, call 217-6944 and our answering service will have a provider call you.

About Our Phone System - We recently updated our phone system. It is important that you listen carefully and choose the correct option in order for us to process your call efficiently and effectively.

Appointments - New patients are accepted by referral from their primary care provider. Follow up appointments are made as prescribed by your cardiologist. Our cardiologists will do their best to be on time for your scheduled appointment. We do appreciate your understanding if your appointment is delayed due to the cardiologist responding to an emergency.

Cancellation of Appointments - Appointments for office visits and testing should be cancelled 24 hours in advance so that we may make those times available to other patients.

Check-In - Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. Co-pays are due at check-in. Insurance cards must be presented at check-in. All other pertinent information will be verified at this time. Your information will be updated at each return visit to our office.

Medical Records - The information in your records is confidential and protected by HIPAA. Your information will not be given out unless you have signed release forms in our office allowing us to do so. There may be a charge for copying and sending records. You will be informed of any charge at the time of your request.

Return Phone Calls - Because our providers have a full-schedule of patients to see each day, they most often return calls at the end of the day. Phone calls are returned in the order they are received.

Prescription Refills - It is important that you do not let your prescriptions run out. Please call (717) 217-6944. Please note that prescriptions cannot be refilled on weekends and when our office is closed for holidays.

Lab and Test Results - You will be either informed at the time of your visit or phoned by our office with your lab or test results.

Payment for Services - S
ervices are available to everyone.  We participate with most insurances and accept Medical Assistance and Medicare.  We have a sliding fee scale for those who qualify, and we will work with patients to set up a payment plan if necessary. Your payment is due at the time of service unless other arrangements have been made.

Billing Questions - Call our office at (717) 217-6944 and choose the Billing option Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm if you have a question about your bill.

Complaints, Suggestions, or Comments - We welcome your concerns, suggestions, and comments so we can continue to make our services better. We offer forms in our waiting room areas and you may also speak to any staff member. If your concerns remain unanswered, you have the right to notify the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations at www.jcaho.org or by calling 1-800-994-6610.
